SO I WANT TO DYE MY HAIR RED / by Alaina Kaczmarski

BUT SHOULD I? HELP ME CHOOSE A NEW HAIR COLOR

alaina k hair color options

I've said it once and I'll say it again, I've never done anything different with my hair. What you see above is my "new, cool haircut" which consisted of about three inches off all around and the shorter, almost a side bang but so not flippies on the side. I've actually been loving it and recently learned how to add texture to my hair (which for 28 years has been lifeless, flat, and oily within 10 hours after a shower). The new layers combined with Not Your Mother's Sea Salt Spray after the shower and Dry Shampoo ($5 at Walgreens!) about five hours later (and then reapplied every day for up to three days) has finally given my hair the texture and oomph I've always wanted!

Cool story, Alaina, what's the point?

The point is, now that I can actually style my hair, I am wanting to try something else different and daring I maybe wouldn't have done before. Like changing up the color.

I've talked about wanting to go red for a long time. Dark, sultry, vibrant red a la Amy Adams or Isla Fisher. But I just haven't... for no real reason other than "what if I don't like it? What if I don't feel like myself?" And ya know what, I'm almost 30. F it. Let's try something new and different! BUT my question is, will red look so so fake like my best friend did it with an at-home kit in my bathtub complete with a streak around my hairline? Will it fade to a weird orangey color with the summer sun? Anyone ever do go dark red? What is the process? Lighten first, then add color? Does it secretly not look good and ya'll are like "Noooo keep it as it is!"

Or should I go light blondish-brown a la Jen Anniston in Friends like I've always wanted but salon colorists are always like "No no no.... we need to do this more subtly. Let's add a couple highlights!" $200 later and I look the exact same. Screw subtle. I want a change!

Please vote in the comments!
1. DARK AMY ADAMS RED
2. LIGHT RED/BROWN/BLONDE
3. BLONDISH LIKE JEN ANNISTON
4. or KEEP IT AS IS

And lastly, know any good salons/colorists in the city? I've been going to Salon Buzz - they're the ones who gave me the great new cut!

Thank you, kindly for the help! :)
